I directed plays for
10 years, from the time I started studying theater at Duke University,
through two years in Berlin, Germany, then three years at the Drama
School at Yale, where I earned an MFA in directing, and for two
years after that. I directed at venues such as Syracuse Stage in
Syracuse, New York, and at New York's Fordham University. My two
most important acting teachers were Evan
Yionoulis and Earle Gister, both of whom served as chairs of
the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama. I am very grateful
to both of them for the knowledge and wisdom they have imparted.
Theater companies and institutions for which I
have worked, in various capacities, include: the Magic Theater,
Playwright's Center of San Francisco, the Yale Repertory Theater,
Manhattan Class Company, Syracuse Stage, Mabou Mines New York,
Schaubuehne am Lehniner Platz, Arc-Light Repertory Theater SF,
Yale Summer School Acting Program, Northwestern University's National
High School Institute, Emerging Artists (New York), The Flea (New
York),Odyssey Theater Ensemble (Los Angeles), Fordham University,
Fairfield University, and Clark University. I have directed productions
of plays by William Shakespeare, Maria Irene Fornes, Peter Handke,
Edward Albee, Eric Overmyer, Wallace Shawn, John Guare, John Webster,
Kandor and Ebb, Liz Duffy Adams, Julie McKee, Robert Curtis, Jody
McAuliffe and Brian Bauman, among others.
Artists and thinkers who have inspired me over the years
include, in no particular order, Anton Chekhov, Belle
and Sebastian, Ludwig Wittgenstein, the Smiths, Patti Smith, John
Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, Peter Handke, Thomas Bernhard, Liz
LeCompte and the Wooster Group, Howard Korder, Marcel Proust,
Blink-182, Miranda July, Bertolt Brecht, Mark Brokaw, Saturday
Looks Good to Me, Kiki and Herb, David Armstrong, Neal Bell, Brett
Bourbon, Francis Bacon, Vermeer, Sandra Bernhard, Seymour Hoffman,
Henry James, Richard Gilman, Liz Duffy Adams, Klaus Michael Grueber,
